Is there anything better than the smell of Christmas in your home? Whether it’s a cinnamon candle or chocolate chip cookies in the oven or this Homemade Holiday Potpourri on the stove, bringing the smells of the holiday into your home makes it extra special.

I always enjoy simmering a beautiful homemade potpourri on the stove. It so easy to recreate this smells to make your house a home!

It starts with the fruit. You can add any types of fruits you enjoy to this recipes. I used tangerines and cranberries to give it a full smell and color of the holiday.

The herbs are important too. I have to have cinnamon sticks in all of my potpourri. Cinnamon is a smell that works all year for me. So I added 3 cinnamon sticks, star anise for the licorice smell, whole cloves, ginger and vanilla extract.

It’s most important to add enough liquid to the pot. This will keep the fruit and herbs from burning on the stove. I used apple cider to add to the holiday smell. I also added water. Again water is necessary to keep the potpourri from burning.

This sits on the stove on a low simmer. As the potpourri simmers, it releases an amazing smell into your kitchen. It’s such an easy way to warm up your home on Christmas morning or anytime during the holidays.

Just remember to keep adding water when you notice the water is getting low. The worst thing is to burn the fruit so keep the water level at least half way up the pot.

Homemade Holiday Potpourri

You’ll love the smell of this Homemade Holiday Potpourri filling your home on Christmas or any time during the holiday season.

Ingredients

  • 3 Tangerines, cut in half
  • 1 1/2 cups Fresh Cranberries
  • 3 Cinnamon Sticks
  • 2 Star Anise
  • 1 teaspoon Whole Cloves
  • 1 inch piece Fresh Ginger
  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  • 1 cup Apple Cider
  • 2 cups Water

Instructions

  1. Add the fruit to a medium to large pot
  2. Top with the cinnamon sticks, star anise, whole cloves, ginger and vanilla extract
  3. Add the liquid — apple cider and water
  4. Place on stove top and let simmer 
  5. Add water or more apple cider when you notice the liquid is getting low

Notes

This potpourri can be used for several hours or a few days.  The important thing is to keep the liquid in the pot so it doesn’t burn.
